Migrating to Amazon’s Product Types API
Amazon is phasing out support for Flat File Feeds and replacing them with JSON Feeds, powered by the Product Types API. WP-Lister for Amazon version 2.8 introduces support for this new system — and it's essential for continued compatibility with Amazon's listing requirements.
Deadline: June 30, 2025
Amazon will disable the legacy Flat File Feed system after June 30, 2025. Until then, existing listings using the old system will continue to work — but all new listings and long-term compatibility require migrating to Product Types.
What’s Changing?
- Old method: WP-Lister used Amazon’s flat file feeds, where listing attributes were tied to browse node categories (e.g., “Clothing & Accessories > Women > Dresses”).
- New method: Amazon now uses the Product Types API, which organizes listings by specific product types (e.g.,
dress
,book
,shoes
) and enforces structured attribute definitions. - You’ll now define attributes based on the selected Product Type, not the category tree.
- WP-Lister will automatically attempt to map your existing profile attributes to their new Product Type equivalents wherever possible — but you should still review and confirm these mappings.
Before You Start
Please read these precautions before migrating any profiles or listings.
- Backup your site before making changes — profile conversion creates new profiles and affects listing configuration.
- Start with a staging site or a low-sales/low-activity product to test attribute submission.
- Disable background updates in WP-Lister by going to WP Admin → Amazon → Settings and set Update Interval to Manually
- The original profiles remain unchanged. WP-Lister creates duplicate "(Converted)" profiles for safe testing.
Migration Steps
1. Update to WP-Lister for Amazon 2.8 (or later)
Ensure you're running version 2.8-beta1 or newer to access the Product Types migration tool.
2. Go to WP Admin → Amazon → Profiles
You’ll see a notice if your profiles are still using the old category-based format. Look for a button that says Convert Profiles, which takes you to the Profile Converter tool.
3. Select Which Templates to Convert
You’ll see a message explaining the transition and a list of current Flat File templates (e.g., Offer – United States, Inventory Loader, etc.). WP-Lister may recommend a product type, but always double-check it manually.
If no recommendation is available, the message will link you to the Product Types page, where you can search and install a replacement Product Type feed in the same marketplace.
4. Review the Conversion Notice (Important!)
On the right, you'll see this Important message:
WP-Lister will create duplicate profiles with a “(Converted)” suffix. Once the conversion is complete, you can manually assign listings to these new profiles.
You must click "Begin Conversion" to continue.
5. Review Your New Profile
After the conversion process, WP-Lister will generate new profiles with a “(Converted)” suffix. These are your new Product Type–based profiles.
To review and finalize the setup:
- Go to WP Admin → Amazon → Profiles and open one of the new "(Converted)" profiles.
- Ensure that the correct Marketplace and Product Type are selected at the top.
- Scroll to the Product Attributes section and check that all previously filled-in values were correctly transferred to the new attribute fields.
- Click the link that says “There might be values that need mapping” — this will show any attributes that require manual input or reassignment.
- Assign values where needed and save the profile when finished.
6. Test the New Profile
Once your new profile is reviewed and saved, test it with one or more existing listings:
- Go to WP Admin → Amazon → Listings.
- Select one or more listings by checking the box to the left.
- From the Bulk Actions dropdown, choose Change Profile, then select the new "(Converted)" profile.
- Click Apply.
- Revise the listing(s) to submit the updated attributes to Amazon.
We strongly recommend testing this process first on a low-sales or inactive listing to minimize potential disruption.
7. Check the Feeds
Once your test listing has been submitted:
- Go to WP Admin → Amazon → Feeds.
- Look for the most recent feed submission and confirm that the correct Product Type and attributes were included.
- Check for any errors or warnings returned by Amazon.
